Flashing is a material that’s used over joints in roof construction to prevent water seeping in and causing damage. Depending on the style of your roof, you probably have flashing in the area around the chimney and pipes. Flashing can be found around windows and skylights as well.

Flat roofs are usually layers of felt and tar. Leaks can occur at low spots or where the felt has been damaged. In most cases, the damaged felt is easy to see and the leak is generally below that spot.
